Biothon 2007
Bear-Paw Regional Greenways invites you to support its third annual Biothon – a species identification treasure hunt to benefit Bear-Paw’s land protection efforts. On June 23, 2007, two teams of skilled naturalists have volunteered to identify as many plant and animal species as possible at conserved properties in Deerfield and Strafford. We’re asking our friends to support our land conservation efforts by contributing to this Biothon fundraiser. Please complete a Pledge Form or a Pledge Sheet and return it to Bear-Paw today. Thank you! With your help, we will be able to protect even more areas like these! What is a Biothon?
The Biothon is a one-day, 12-hour event, in which 2 teams of skilled naturalists volunteer to identify as many plant and animal species as possible at two sites – on two properties protected by Bear-Paw conservation easements. Team members, Bear-Paw board members, and supporters are asking their friends to pledge a fixed amount or a certain amount per species found at a Biothon site.
Where will the Biothon take place?
The Biothon will take place at 2 different sites in Deerfield and Strafford.
Why should I make a pledge for the Biothon?
The Biothon fundraiser will support the expansion of Bear-Paw’s land conservation activities. We hope to raise $5,000 through this event. Your donation will go straight to work by protecting more land and helping maintain the region’s biodiversity.
How can I pledge and when is my pledge due?
There are two ways you can pledge. First, you can pledge a flat amount now, regardless of the number of species identified at a particular site. Or, you can pledge a specific amount per species identified by a Biothon team, such as 25˘. If a team identifies 160 different species, your donation would amount to $40.00. After the event, we will let you know how many species were identified and collect your pledge. We expect to find 160 – 200 species at each site. Bear-Paw hopes to collect all pledges by July 31st. Checks should be made payable to Bear-Paw Regional Greenways. Bear-Paw Regional Greenways is a nonprofit land trust led by resident volunteers who are concerned about the loss of natural areas throughout the organization’s seven town service area of Candia, Deerfield, Epsom, Northwood, Nottingham, Raymond, and Strafford. The organization is committed to ensuring that the region's most important natural resources continue to be available for future generations and is working to promote voluntary land protection through outreach, education, and transaction assistance.
Bear-Paw Biothon Locations
Deerfield: Sylvia Clifford Farm Easement
This easement covers over 82 acres off of Mount Delight Road in Deerfield – the farm was protected just last year and has over 35 acres of prime farm soils. There are 11 acres of hayfields with the rest of property covered by forests and forested wetlands. It also includes a small section of Nichols Brook. The landscape protected by this conservation easement also contributes to scenic views along Mount Delight Road, Old Center Road, and Haynes Road.
Strafford: Corey Colwell Easement
This easement covers over 150 acres on the side of Parker Mountain overlooking Bow Lake in Strafford. The property is extremely diverse and includes a variety of forests, forested wetlands, and beaver flowages. Aside from the forest, wildlife, and scenic values of the Colwell easement itself, it has added worth because it abuts the 600-acre Strafford Town Forest lands, which in turn link to the vast acreage of the Blue Hills Foundation properties.
